The directory selects the 1,111 largest records by population in the saved source lists. It includes 906 England areas, 113 Scottish localities, 62 Welsh areas and 30 Northern Ireland settlements. London appears once; separate London wards are excluded.
England and Wales use ONS Census 2021 built-up area populations, with London taken from Nomis Census 2021. Scotland uses NRS Census 2022 localities. Northern Ireland uses the 2011 population recorded for NISRA 2015 settlement boundaries.
The source years and geographic definitions differ. This is a ranking of recorded source populations, not a current-year, directly comparable UK league table. London is a regional entry. Equal populations are ordered by source name and area code.
